Yup, you're right. The lack of fishing reports does indicate a lack of good things to crow about. Earlier this spring we saw some outstanding catches including a number of true trophy class stripers. However, things went downhill shortly after Fathers Day. The weather has been great for gardening, but lousy for stripe fishing. All of the rain and cool temps have combined to put a damper on the fishing in the Kowaliga Basin.
Although you can still pick up an occasional stripe down river, it appears that the masses have done something very unusual for this time of year and have migrated back up to the northern end of the lake. Since the water hasn't moved above 84 degrees at the surface, they are able to range freely around the lake. And I have a hunch that there are much better levels of dissolved oxygen upriver. All of the water that is flowing through the dam has likely had a negative impact on the DO levels near the dam. Why do I say that? Because there has been almost no surface activity and most of the marks we're seeing are very deep (50-60') and laying close to the bottom. Marks like that are typical of late August and indicate (to me) that the scattered stripes that have remained downriver are stressed and not spending any energy feeding.
I very much appreciate all of the calls to reserve some time, but won't take folks when we believe that the fishing is poor. That said, we'll continue to go scouting and networking. When there is strong evidence that the stripes have returned to the Kowaliga area, you can bet that we'll let you know so stay Tooned!
