Hmmmm ? 

Sandy, a fellow graduate student in my Virginia Tech Masters Geophysics Program was able to mathematically show that earthquakes cause sunspots. (I did the [independent] control study for her work on the correlation of climate cycles to the frequency of shallow earthquakes in the Piedmont region of Virginia and North Carolina.) She was asked by the senior professors to do the earthquake-sunspot routine at the end of her thesis defense. After stifling laughter at some of her valid but preposterous mathematical presentation, the entire department gave her a standing ovation on her conclusion.
