In 1971, I was team chief (E-5) for an early-morning radiosonde mission (weather balloon with instrument package). To meet the nationwide launch window, at 0400 I would get up and drive around the housing and barracks of Yuma Proving Ground to pick up the other four members of my team. ONE of them was a pot smoker (who never managed to get beyond PV1). I would simply enter his quarters and roll him off his mattress on the floor where he and his wife were sleeping… usually naked. Then I would order him to get dressed. I made sure he had his security badge around his neck.

One morning I could not coax him past his nasty jockey shorts. I was FURIOUS! So, I hung his security badge around his neck and led him to the vehicle. “Far out, man… righteous!” None of his team mates uttered a word as the half naked, half stoned private blundered into the vehicle. The launch site was in the high-security area of the YPG test range. I have no doubt that you can picture what happened when we drove up to the security post.

From that moment on, my team was one man short. To launch, track, and receive and analyze radiosonde data takes FIVE technicians. The message needs to be on the queue when Ashville center calls your number. The operation needs two to launch and close-in track, one to receive and record data, one to work the winds aloft board, and one to prepare the Skew T/Log P chart for the airfield. One of the launch crew shifts to coding the NWC message and loading it into the queue.

The YPG Met detachment commander was FURIOUS with me. I never got a replacement for PV1 Richardson. AND, I would be subject to disciplinary action if Ashville filed a complaint. PV1 Richardson was assigned to the post library… until he went AWOL for good. My team NEVER failed… we were used to doing it with only four competent people. We used to shove him out the door right after the launch… hoping he’d wander on out into the desert.

I have no problem putting dope use and users in perspective.
