The passing of Senator Howard Baker (pray tell why we don't have any like him today) reminded me of a funny story I once read that was credited to him:

When he was a young lawyer in Tennesee he was hired by an older man from the east TN mountains who was accused of a criminal offense.  Baker said that at their initial meeting to discuss a defense strategy the old mountain man ended the interview with the statement "Now Hired, iffn hit gits to whar you see the onlyist thang that gona keep me frum agoin to prison is me atellin a lie, you let me know n' I'll shore tell it."
