I don't think he is trying to ruin this country as a world power. I think he is walking a very tight line. The majority of Americans couldn't find Ukraine on the map, much less be concerned about Russian designs on it. We are a war-weary country, particularly when there are no readily apparent threats to the U.S. homeland by Russia. And to "help" the Ukraine will cost the U.S. money that it doesn't have. I think most people take Putin's saber rattling as just that. Not that I don't think he needs to be put in his place - and I don't think sanctions are going to do it. He wants to maintain access to the Black Sea and that particular area of Ukraine is where the have the weapons expertise - not to mention that it is the equivalent to Florida for retired Russians.
I think that Obama, like many democrats, do not trust the military - they don't understand it; nor do they understand the concept of projection of power. I have every faith that the military has numerous strategies for dealing with Putin, but it remains to be seen if Obama will listen to any of them.
