I sometimes wonder how much of this has to do with the economy and how much of it has to do with competition.  That Pure station on 63 had their gas at a premium price and although I was never in there, I'm sure their convenience store items were similarly priced.  There was other competition in the immediate area that beat them out on price and selection, and the customers went there instead.

As far as the Winn Dixie - if there is a Super Walmart in Tallessee, I feel sure that it had more to do with the closing than the economy.  I believe Winn Dixie announced it would be closing some number of stores this year.  These stores cannot compete with WalMart in terms of price and convenience.  I frequent the Winn Dixie in Alex City because I am anti Walmart, but it is far from an ideal grocery store.  Half  the time, I've thrown out better looking produce than what is being offered for sale.  But I think the majority of people shop at Walmart.

I don't think that even if the economy was booming, it would be the same for these businesses.  Not every business that closes is because the economy isn't booming.  Bad management, retirements, and competition is more often the cause.
