Let me explain what this means.  There are literally dozens of insurance companies that sell auto or homeowners insurance in the state of Georgia.  Not so with health insurance.  In many states it is heavily regulated and as a result the market is dominated by one or two insurers which is pretty much a monopoly for all practical purposes.  Having more competition will improve access and affordability.  This change by itself is not some great panacea and it will not improve things everywhere but it is one piece of the puzzle.

Here is a decent argument for this change in response to some recent critiques.  What is missing from those critical of this element of responsible health care reform is the false idea that anyone actually thinks this alone is answer to all our problems.  No one thinks that but I believe it is one thing Congress can do that will help.
