I suspect it forced Romney to release more years of tax returns than he planned. Then, it opened up more questions about his wealth. It was a rather inexpensive  approach to overcoming all the money the Koch brothers were putting into the campaign for Romney by putting the right on the defense. They had to do TV ads and spend money to overcome the negative comments by Reid. Sadly, truth and politics don't seem to work well together.
