I seem to recall that Bill Clinton was impeached.  I don't think that was anyone letting him get away with anything.  I don't know anyone that was pretty much disgusted by Bill Clinton's antics and he never particularly claimed to be a Christian. 

The Kennedys were in such a different time period - the early 60s where this kind of thing just did not get out in public.  I don't think anyone ever let Ted Kennedy off for what he did.  But after 30 -40 years, people tend to forget these things. 

Even Anthony Weiner lost his job and was openly made fun of in the press. 

I don't think either side is treated differently - but maybe a little more is made of some Republicans when they use family values and tout their religious beliefs as a way to get elected.  Most Democrats don't use that to get elected. 

But I don't have a lot of sympathy for any of them - if you want to pursue a public life in politcs, you have to realize that there will be no secrets, because someone is always watching.
