What I heard about Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton (before he became a name), they made money shaking down companies by promising not to cause an uprising in the black workers.  While he would have liked to be the next MLK, he never made it, in my opinion, becasue he wasn't nearly as educated as MLK and couldn't stir people the way MLK did.  All he became was the agitator in chief, and a community organizer for those who aren't even as smart as he is.

With regard to reparations, if there were still people living that had been slaves, then I would be all for paying reparations.  But the idea that something is owed to their ancestors is just ridiculous.  Some members of the black community like and promote the idea becasue - hey, it would be free money; and those same people are bilking the government on welfare and various other entitlements.  It's the "world owes me something" attitude.  I don't know why I should be obligated to pay reparations since my family is from the North and to my knowledge, never had slaves.

I'm a little more sympathetic to a generation of blacks, who were held back in menial jobs like cooks, nannies, housekeepers, janitors, etc, because due to the culture at the time, they could not be employed otherwise.  But as you point out the Black community is not the only ones suffering from past indignities.  What we did to the Indians, and what we continue to do to them is horrible. If we owe reparatins to anyone it is probably the Indians.  (I seem to be paying them back every time I step into the casino :-) )
