Agreed 100%  - another aspect of it is that for a long time students are told run/hide/fight ( fight being the last resort ) same used to be procedure for hijackers of airplanes.  I think that part of the reason some are stepping up and going toward the problem and not run/hide is that if they have watched any news at all they know that in the early minutes they are on their own and in horrible cases such as Florida when officers on site and arrive while the sounds of gunfire are still active - but still decided not to go in quickly to protect children.

We saw the same with the  passangers over Pennsylvania that the hijackers on 9/11 were not just going to fly to some airport and wait for a ransom, or want some terrorist released somewhere.  

More people fight back when they know the other choice is just to allow a bad person to kill yourselfe or others and I think as it gets worse and it is no longer just "Sit tight and everything is going to be OK" that more and more people will do what they have to do to protect themselves or others.
