First of all. masks only prevent the "big chunks" of virus-laden liquids from escaping, and those are heavy enough to settle to the ground pretty quickly anyway.  What they don't do is get the tiny droplets, described in other posts, that are so small that they escape through the porous material, be it paper or cloth.  Add to that the lack of standards for mask construction and wear, and what you end up with are all kinds of concoctions that offer practically no protection, in OR out.  In fact, from what I have observed many people "wear" neckerchiefs or home-made masks that consist of a single layer of very porous cloth, and half the time they are barely on the face, offering all kinds of avenues for even the big droplets to escape.  I don't believe the positive advantages of wearing masks are as cut and dried as you would have us believe, and MM is right, the better solution is to avoid "opportunities" to come in contact with the virus in the first place by avoiding close proximity or contact to those whose infection status you don't know, and to ensure you practice the personal hygiene steps the doctors recommed to minmize the chances of the virus taking hold in one's body.
