It's not unusual for narcissists to do good deeds, so they get praise and look good, but they don't do these things because it comes from their heart or because they are empathetic to others - they do it to make a good showing, knowing these things will get discussed and shine on them.

Narcissists don't have a strong sense of self - in fact, they are very insecure people, and the way they feel better about themselves is to put on bravado.  When they don't get the praise they are expecting, they are really crushed and tend to lash out.
