With regard to your claim "He never would have killed all the little kids with a pistol."  Au contraire.  If anything he might have been able to kill more.  A normal backpack could easily carry several handguns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in magazines as large as 33 rounds each (e.g., for a Glock 9mm), maybe even more, and that backpack would cause less suspicion when the perp enters a school than an Armalight Rifle model 15 or other long gun.  In a typical classroom, say 20x30 feet, a handgun would be easier to handle than a long gun and most semi-automatic handguns are incredibly easy and fast to reload, and any loss in accuracy would be overcome by the sheer number of rounds that could be fired.
