THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the LAKE
Not a creature was stirring, not even a CAT
The BEER MUGS were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that CAT BOAT soon would be there
The BOATERS were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of LOUD BOATS danced in their heads
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap
When out on the WATER there arose such a clatter
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter
Away to the window I flew like a flash
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash
The moon on the WATER BRIGHT AS SNOW
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a LOUD AND FAST BOAT and eight LIVELY FOLKS
With EIGHT FORUM MEMBERS so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it must be CAT'S BOAT
More rapid than PONTOONS his coursers they came
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name
"Now, JAW! now, JIM! now, ROSWELLRIC and LAMONT!
HI, FEB! HI JOY! HI, JLAZC and LAKEMAN!
To the top of the DOCK! to the top of the SEAWALL!
Now SWIM away! SWIM away! SWIM away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly
When they meet with an obstacle mount to the sky
So up to the DOCK the BOATS they DID TIE
With A BOAT full of BEER, I TELL YOU NO LIE
And then in a twinkling I heard FROM THE DOCK
The DANCING and DRINKING of THOSE FROM THE ROCK
As I WAVED MY hand, and was turning around
Down FROM the DOCK CAT came with a bound
He was dressed FOR A PARTY from head to foot
And his clothes were all WET HE CARED NOT A HOOT
A FULL CASE OF BUD he had flung on his back
He looked like a PARTYMAN CHECKING his pack
His eyes -- how they twinkled, His dimples how merry
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry
THE CAT MAN WAS STANDING ON FRONT OF THE BOAT
HIS BEER WAS SO COLD AND CAT NEEDED A COAT
The stump of a BUTT he held tight in his teeth
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly
He was chubby and plump A JOLLY GOOD GUY
And I laughed SO HARD I WANTED TO CRY
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread
He spoke not a word but went straight to his work
AND HANDED OUT BEER then turned with a jerk
And laying his finger aside his COLD nose
And giving a nod HIS MOTOR HE STARTED
He sprang to his BOAT to ALL gave a whistle
And away THE BOAT WENT AS FAST AS A MISSLE
HIS MUFFLERS SO LOUD AS he drove out of sight
I heard him exclaim, "Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."
