1. That area is shallow and only got water when there was a lot of rainfall. It was bowl shaped and steep until they built the lake and knocked out the ends. Animals would get caught in there looking for water and slowly died of thirst. Hence it was called a deadening area.

2. Right before the creek wars that culminated at Horseshoe Bend the Creeks captured a band of Cherokee's that were friendy to Andrew Jackson and sacrificed them to their war god on the ridge. Hence Cherokee Ridge

3. There used to be a grouchy old man that would come visit his sister's grave and a neighbor played a practical joke by putting the gator there to have some fun, kind of like this post.
