I guess I have a hard time getting excited over something I consider so trivial. Just to make sure I’m not being overly callous on this issue, I just asked my wife (Auburn Engineering Class of ‘80) her opinion; she seemed to care less than I do.

If someone wants to dance, swing flags, play in the band, or throw batons for fun, I think that is great. However, I’ve seen many parents over-emphasize the importance of these things with their children while letting academics take a back seat. In my opinion, the primary goal of school should be to learn skills that will make a real difference in careers and success (unless the only goal is to find a sugar daddy, which happens). In the big picture, this issue should be about a little fun for the kids and a side show for the games (which have a similar but far more complex problem with university politics).
