Sad to say, but as we start a new year we are saddled with a poorly thought out war that was more a result of our outrage over the 9/11 attacks than a necessary military action. We were looking for an enemy to fight and we couldn't find one. Al Queda was just an illusive terrorist group with no headquarters, no army, no battlefield to assault. Iraq had a boastful, detestible dictator with the 4th largest army in world , who happened to be sitting atop 25% of the world's known oil reserves. Anyone (except us Americans) knew he had nothing to do with Al Queda. In fact, as a secular dictator who was slaughtering Muslims, Al Queda would hate him more than we would.

So Bin Laden's genius was to bait us into a war that we could not win, where our presence would solidify Arabs against us, spend our resources, and actually encourage radical Islamism. An Arab terrorist with a sense of history would know we would seek out revenge and would be so impatient as to choose any available target, he may also have supposed we might just take out the regimes he opposed in the Arab world out of our own blind rage.

And weapons of mass destruction? Well, our government spins messages to us to rally and persuade us to agree with whatever foreign policy objectives exist in Washington at the time. WMD was a smoke screen, a self-serving lie and political deception..... and we wanted to believe in them.

We did this to ourselves. Our government is just a reflection of us. They can only represent the public's will... and as Americans we are notoriously self-absorbed, self important and uninformed about the world at large. We think we rule the world. and the Bin Ladens can manipulate us because we are both arrogant and naive.

Now it's more complicated than just bringing the troops home right away. We can't leave and we can't stay. We won't come out ahead unless we are smarter than our enemy. And so far, we haven't been.
