almost killed the renewable energy market. It was: get 40% tax credit for energy saving devices up to $10,000 thus $4000 credit. My dad bought a storm door and got back 40%. ~ 1982. Still there, wish he was.
OK, that's good. But swindlers "invented" the worst things. One was a hot water heater that tracted the sun. Cost? $10,000, installed but only at today's "seminar". Prices going up after this. A high pressure salesman tells you your house is worth $10,000 more on resale, but you only pay $6,000. How can you go wrong? Big busness in a few years was removing them and fixing roof holes.
They take your money and in a few years when it fails, they were out of business. Windmills too. Lots of crap.
Thing was that there is a place for these things but only in a free market. I have a PV panel on my boat. Cost? About $300, but cheaper than instaling power to dock and paying minimum per month. Coast Guard has 1000.s of them on nav. bouys. Flat panel hot water heaters are $80 now in a box. Easy in no freeze areas. The bad stuff sold just to get a tax credit left people with a bad tast in their mouths that lingers now.
I bring this up because Home power mag just loved an L.A. urban house that was made of re-cyled sheet metal. It was, bar none, the ulgiest house I have ever seen but left a tiny "footprint" on the enviroment.
