The main cause of loss of trees in a hurricane vs a tornado is that the hurricane has tropical storm rain prior to the wind picking up. The root systems get saturated with water, and the ground gets soft letting the wind just push the trees over...

Bad losses regardless of cause. At least with a hurricane you have ample warning of its approach...
