The news around here (I live in Marietta) is pretty negative about the COE dropping Allatoona so lakes in Alabama such as Lake Martin can reduce their outflow. I can understand their angst as we have all seen the effect of Lake Martin bearing the brunt of the flow to maintain the levels in the Alabama River. I suspect the algae was always there, its just being exposed because of the lower levels in Allatoona. The fact is (and I say this as a Georgia resident) that Lake Allatoona has benefited all summer at the expense of Lake Martin and it seems fair that the pain be shared. This is especially true since north Georgia has not experienced the same level of drought as central and northern Alabama.
