Most marine engines only run compression ratio's of about 8.75 to 9.25 to 1. Usually, in most applications we only run 3-7 psi. of boost/pressure. (Unlike drag cars that have 15psi or more). The boost pressure is kept low, because of the extended amount of time a marine engine operates at a higher rpm range vs. a automotive engine in a truck or car that runs down a drag strip at w.o.t. for 5-10 seconds. Anyway, with say 5lbs. of boost the static comp. ration stays relatively low. A couple of other things to assure reliability is ingition timing is kept low, usually 30*-32* total advance. We also remove the thermostat and circulator pump from the block, and run around 110 deg. of water temp. The ring gaps are set a little wider as well as the piston/cyl.wall clearance a little wider. This is probably more information than you ask for. Sorry for the long post. Interesting question though.
