very qualified to make a report but...

I went. It was interesting. I got there right after it started and didn't leave until they closed the business meeting. Unfortunately by that time all of the handouts were gone. So I don't have many of the sources of the information that they were talking about. I think they were surprised by the turnout.

Basically, the bulk of the time was a guy from APCO in charge of lakeshore permitting discussing what you can do (not much) and what you can't do (just about anything) without a permit. He talked about how seriously they are pursuing violators - to the point of flying over the lake at 500 feet looking for them. It seems that they take dredging or digging in the lakebed the most seriously. Good thing, 'cause of the PCB's lurking there. That and the size and type structure allowed to be built on the lake (piers and boathouses) and encroachment on APCO’s easement were covered pretty extensively.

I asked whether this information (detailed guidelines) was avbl on APCO’s website and was told it could be found there. I had looked for it a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t find it. She said they had only recently added it (how convenient). I looked again today and I still can’t find it. Wish I had gotten one of those handouts – if anybody here went to the meeting and has that information I’d like to know where on the website they’re hiding it.

The fee to join LMLPA is $25 which I thought was pretty stiff for a group that only sent out a few newsletters a year. The bulk of that money is used to help defray the cost of the Renew Our Rivers cleanup project. They also said how much money they spent on that last year (a considerable amount). I’ll buy that and I’ll be sending them my $25 to join. I think last year they got about 13 tons of junk out of Logan Martin alone. That’s a worthy cause. The next one will be in late March or early April of ’08. I’m in. The next LMLPA newsletter will come out in January and the exact date will in there.

Last but not least about the meeting – there seemed to be a number of newcomers to the lake. People are under the impression that the water at Logan Martin is REALLY low. My family has had a house on LM since 1967. It’s not unusual for the level to go down to 459 in the winter. It’s just now getting lower than it’s been in recent years. We’re in a heck of lot better shape than Lake Martin.

Speaking of Lake Martin –t here’s an interesting article in the Nov 1st issue of Lake Martin Magazine:
http://www.lakemartinmagazine.com/articles/2007/11/14/features/news02.txt
It’s specific to Lake Martin but much of the information applies to Logan Martin.

Another place with great information on the Coosa and other Alabama rivers is:
http://www.riversofalabama.org/index.htm
It gives a detailed description of each river, the lakes and the history behind them.
It’s very helpful in understanding the Alabama/Georgia/Florida Whose Water Is It War. (It’s ours.) (and that was a joke).
I hope the links translate. If not and anyone is interested I'll repost separately.

I apologize for any typos, grammar booboos, misspelling or misinformation. I did say that I wasn’t really qualified to make a report.
