I have a '96 Malibu Tantrum. I bought it used in 1999 and it's the best investment I've ever made. ZERO problems in all the time I've owned it. Well, aside from the usual little tweaky things that come up. Nothing major. It ALWAYS cranks. Waterski Mag reviewed it (I'm not sure when - it's says '99 but I thought they only made it from 95 to 97).

Waterski Mag review:
Malibu introduced the Tantrum a couple years back as a nuts-and-bolts inboard for cost-conscious buyers. Then, at its first boat test a year ago, the Tantrum smashed several performance records. Our barefoot team was particularly impressed with the pop and power with the Monsoon 320 engine. The driving and skiing were so much fun that nobody really missed a teak platform or standard passenger bench. Buyers won't complain about pedestal-style passenger seats when the Tantrum blisters past the neighbor's boat - or when it's time to make the next payment. The Tantrum is half the price of upscale inboards.

They are still listed used for more than I paid for mine in '99. Here's a link to one for sale:
