I pounded the Real Island area last weekend, and if it hadn't been for a school of White Bass, it would have been a very bad trip. I couldn't find active Bass anywhere, and the wind kept me and my jonboat off of many of my best spots.
As for fishing the Crappie lights, I also do best fishing away from the bright center. While I see plenty of fish in the center, they just don't want to bite there The best lights are the ones in deep water or close to it, like on a point near the main lake. I personally don't like to fish lights with lots of brush around them. I lose too many lures, which means re rigging by flashlight, and I have enough trouble tying knots in the daytime while wearing my contact lenses. The lights with little or no brush, or just brush under the pier, seem to produce better for me anyway. The resident fish may relate to the brush, but I think that the fish that are drawn to the light from elsewhere are not looking to relate to any cover while they chase down the baitfish.
