That is no stupid question. But, Yes, that is your kill switch. Normally it flips up into a three sided box (so to speak). Your lanyard has an oval shaped, or round ring of sorts that slides on the switch pole, and stays around it when flipped up into the little three sided box. If you fall out, the lanyard pulls on the ring and the switch flips down and your engine stops. That is about the best way I can explain it by typing.
