But truly MM -- isn't that true of everyone we elect?
I'm not sure I read where BO promised quite everything you have stated, but you are right -- the spin is there. And if he doesn't make good on the promises, he'll probably only have one term. I would not want to be in his position. But I'm going to believe that he can at least do some of it.

I expected a lot of discussion about race, since he is the first African American President. I hope that people realize that affirmative action has not worked in the past, and will not work in the future. I think affirmative action has to come from within and making sure that the best qualified applicant gets the job no matter what race or religion or background. I was very pleased to be able to mentor 3 young African Americans in the last 10 years of my career. One was, surprisingly enough, from Montgomery. But the thing that I about all three of them is that they were wonderfully motivated. One had his Masters when he came to me, and I was able to help him get on a career path in which he has been very, very successful. Another is a young Navy man, who I was able to encourage to go back to school -- he was the first of his family to graduate from college. The other was a woman who was very sharp, but had never had the courage to compete for promotion.
If you set up artifical quotas, the people that benefit never get the respect of their peers because they are resented by others.
Heavens, I hope that lesson has been learned.
