Both sides are right about Limbaugh. He speaks the truth for millions and he makes some idiotic assertions. He made it big during the 90s because of the justaxapostion against the liberal policies and lifestyle of William Jefferson Clinton. The policies he expounded seemed to make a little sense given the alternative. That is what is happening again now, only on a broader scale. These are not your daddy's liberal times, we are headed for deep DD.

This pendulum has swung back and forth for so many years, to a large extent that has been healthy, checks and balances have worked. But the main line has been broken and we need to attach it to the old clock just in time or we will never get "back to the future". Republicans in leadership (Bush and others) extended government spending like crazy (war, 911, Katrina, other disasters, mostly necessary spending except for the war--many will disagree with that), while trying to hold to a "less government" philosophy. Then the housing/subprime/whatever disaster and the Republicans in power (Bush and others) did not want the country to go under on their watch, so they called for the "must do this now" bailout in late 2008. Adding more spending while asserting "less government". (My opinion then and my opinion now was to let the businesses that made bad decisions fail).

Now the Democrats are in power, and they have always wanted to spend, only the checks and balances have worked well to maintain some constraints. Now they call for more spending and the Republicans say "no, we want less government and less spending". And the Democratic leadership says "You want WHAT?".

It is called getting away from principles, and it is principles that sell. When marginalized, when you are left with extreme alternatives to choose from, the one who can stay closest to your core principles gets your attention, even if you cannot agree with all the baggage that comes with it.

Bottom line: I do agree that we are traveling new territory. We cannot afford what we have spent on war/disasters, we cannot afford what we spent in '08 for tarp and bailout, and we surely cannot afford what has already been committed in '09. My plan to to increase the size of my garden, gather buckets to water it, and learn how to fish.
