I saw an interesting discussion about the Geitner plan for toxic assets. As I understood it, the success of the plan depends on the market being willing to buy assets currently valued at $.30 cents on the dollar, for $.70 on the dollar. This will help the banking system because it relieves them of the toxic assets, and people will want to invest in it because of the possibility of high gains. Although Wall Street loved it yesterday, it doesn't seem to pass the common sense test to me.
Am I understanding it correctly?
