I just finished reading "Eyes on the Horizon" by Retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard B. Myers.
Of course, he covers 9/11 and Iraq, but to tell the truth, I was a little disappointed -- didn't really get any new information. What I found interesting though is the Part IV of his book "Our National Security Future". He describes the problem of defining the nature of our adversary. I don't know if I can do it justice in a post because he goes into a fair amount of detail about the far end fundamentalists who see Islam and the Western world as mutually exclusive and the bulk of the Muslim world who does not support the violent methods employed by the extremists. One of the most interesting ideas is that the insurgents see just fighting as a victory and that they don't have a specific goal identified as "victory". I think he does an excellent job desribing our challenges.
It's well worth the read and if you don't want to shell out the $18 for the book itself, it's worth checking it out of the library just to read Part IV.

I'm about to start reading Baghdad at Sunrise by Pete Mansoor. It's a boots on the ground account by a former Brigade Commander. He later worked for Petraeus.
