I don't think anything should be free, and I'm certainly not in favor of illegals getting care on us. (I'm very, very conservative about illegals).
I went to the emergency room on a Saturday night about a year ago. I was still in VA. The place was jammed with people, mostly Hispanic. Some of them seemed very sick. (in fact, I decided not to stay because I was afraid I was going to end up with something worse than what I went in with.) The ones that weren't Hispanic looked poor and sick. I would bet that most of them weren't paying for health care, and would not end up paying for health care services that night.
I'm not sure there is anything wrong with McCain's plan. But, a $5,000 tax credit assumes you have the $5,000 to start with. For me, it would be great, but others? Would they buy the health care? Maybe not.
But what would be great is if we had several viable plans on the table and really see them debated in terms of true cost and coverage. I don't view this as a partisan issue. And our pols need to get off their butts on this one. What I'm afraid of is that we'll get some kind of health care that Kennedy has been crafting all these years... and I'd hate to see them pass it in honor of Kennedy (with his brain tumor and all).
