In the Army, it was considered less polite to say "Yes, General" than it was to say "Yes, sir". One shows that you are being respectufl only to the rank, the other shows that you are being respectful to the man.

I worked for the Army, in the Pentagon, in the Army Staff for 5 years 1990-1995. Maybe it was different in the AF. Lots of differences I have observed between the way the AF functions and the Army.
