omni (from Latin [omnis]:all) directional sensors sense distance in ALL directions. Hence, as you are approaching the sheer rock walls the sensor might be picking up a close proximity between the boat and the rocks and interpreting that as a shallow depth.

A linear sensor senses in a straight line (like a gun shoots). If the sensor is correctly pointing in a downward direction, it can only detect the vertical distance of non-obstructed water available to navigate in. That being said, if the linear directional sensor is pointing in a non-vertical direction it too will interpret near horizontal objects as "shallow" water.
