I'm glad you checked this out on Snopes. In 1984, the government converted its retirement system from CSRS to FERS. FERS is made up of SS, Thrift Savings Contributions and a small federal pension. Both systems are based on your years of service, etc.

I saw this video a while ago. I thought it raised some good points, as echoed by Yankee06 here. Really makes one think about how often you weigh in with your elected officials.
