Harry Truman got his start in politics as part of the Pendergast machine that ran KC and Jackson County, MO. He surprised them by refusing to be a part of their corrupt dealings but he remained close to the machine boss Tom Pendergast. while Truman was president Pendergast spend some time in prison and shortly after being released he died. It was announced that the President would attend his funeral. A reporter asked Truman if he thought it was politically wise to do so and regardless why would he under any circumstances honor such a disreputable man by going to his funeral? Truman's reply "I'm going to his funeral because he was a friend of mine."....Indeed Truman was a different kind of politician and and one hell of a man.
