A young theology student is sent for several weeks to minister to a small Methodist congregation on the hills of north Georgia while the pastor is undergoing medical treatment. After his first sermon a parishioner invites the preacher to have supper with him and his wife the following Thursday evening. He arrives at the appointed time but finds nobody home. After 15 minutes on the porch swing he sees a cloud of dust an a pickup coming over the distant hill. The church member and his wife depart the truck with heartfelt apologies. "Sorry to be late preacher but a prominent resident of the valley died Monday night and our retired Baptist preacher Brother Johnson was doing the funeral. Now Brother Johnson don't get much chance to preach these day so when he does preach he tends mightly to go on even worse than he did before he retired. In fact if I was sentenced to hang and had a last request i'd have to be a sermon by Brother Johnson cause in the first place I know i'd delay the hanging be at least 3 hours and in the second place after a couple o' hours of Brother Johnson's preaching I'd start gettin' right anxious to get on with the hanging."
