I plan to buy a ski/sport boat this Spring if the water is going to be above 480. I am looking at the Yamaha Boats with the tower. I need advise on what I should look for and look out for. We will use it for watersports as well as just riding around. Any advise you can provide will be appreciated.
Lakerlady I would recommend just riding the lake to begin with with a map and/or with someone familiar with the areas you are most interested in. Now would be a perfect time to become familiar with the lake with trips planned later as the water begins to rise. Mark your map for the hazardous areas so you will know where they are.
You are so right about marking different areas. I have been on the lake, part time for most of my life. Starting in 2003 I now spend my summers there. My job allows me to work from home, although it is much harded to work with the lake so close. My pontoon boat is out of the water for now, especially since I have no water. Once my dredging is completed I hope to put it back in and mark areas on my GPS. I will be up that way this weekend but will not have the time to put the boat in the water. Maybe sometime in December I will have a chance to do so. I know the lake has taken on a totally different look with the water so low. I really want to make some pictures for my kids and grandkids as hopefully they will not see these low levels again. Under normal water levels I know the lake and where the hazards are, but these are not normal conditions. Thanks for the great advise.
Right NOW is the time to look for a boat. Not next spring. Even in non draught years, fall/winter is when to buy one. I also wouldn't buy a brand new one but that's just me. I have a Malibu (1996) that has been great to own. No mechanical problems. Really comfortable ride. Very low wake (I'm a slalom skier). I LOVE my boat. Best money I've ever spent. I ski all year - haven't missed a weekend since Labor Day. So I get a lot of use out of it.
Now is a great time to shop for a boat. I hear we should reach 483 and no lower but full pool would be best. I like the Yamaha sport boats especially the jet foot ....great for low water.
There are many good ski boats out there to choose from. Most important is your price range because you can get a good ski boat for around 10K or you can walk out of a showroom after spending 60K. All in what you want. Remember lake martin is rough lake and ski boats don't do real well in the "pleasure riding" area. On the good side, most ski boats are heavy which helps some with the rough wakes. Take the weight of the boat and the length of the boat into consideration when looking. Also, if buying used, make sure to check the hour meter and make sure you get it checked out before you purchase it. (see CATBOAT) If the boat does not have a hour meter, a technician can hook a meter to the motor and it has a censor or something in there verify the hours used. Don't settle for the "boat has hardly been used" line. January and February are the good times to buy. Bought both of my boats in February and got good deals. One from boattrader.com and the other right here on this site. Good luck!
