Any you boys round here hunt bears in north Ga.? I've never done this but gonna give it a try in a few weeks. Will be hunting out of Jasper which is supposed to be close the the highest consentration of the critters in the state. I'm gonna be traditional and carry a buffalo rifle in 45-70. Does anyone have any tips? Oh yeah, since both my knees are blown out I'm going to carry a 44 for backup.

The guys on this Forum only see the bars at the zoo and the joints. When you are in Jasper you will be about 20 miles from Dawsonville home of NASCAR driver Awesome Bill from Dawsonville. I remember spending many days and nights camping and trout fishing around Dahlonega Ga which is 40 miles NE of Jasper. It is really in the mountains but remember vividly seeing bars and wonder now why I continued camping.

With global warmming and the melting of the ice cap, you need to be on the lookout for polar bars in and around Jasper.

Cheers man!!! It gets cold in dem dere mountains at night. Bring plenty of thermal and warm clothes.

Thanks for the warning. And I thought that big ol' mountain around there was made of stone and all time it was a glacier with bars on top. Guess I'll pack a .338 bolt action instead of the 45-70 once shooter. And if it gets too cold I'll bunk with my buddy that stays in Big Canoe.

How did you train and prepare for your hunt?

Most experts recommend you select an inner city area (Los Angeles, Chicago, and/or Washington D.C.) and spend a few weeks roughing it with the inner city gang bears.

It will improve both your survival and shooting skills. Carry plenty of ammo

Bunking with a buddy in a canoe (to stay warm) is not preferred activity for most men. ---LOL--- The vast majority prefer to start a camp fire, but to each his own.

I think dangerous bears maybe the least of your worries. We may now also understand what happened to your knees.

You need to take the Hound for a visit to de Big Canoe in North Georgia.

Mr. Feb, Thanks for your advice and concern. As far as conditioning I have to ride a bike cause the knees won't tolerate running. As far as shooting I do that a lot. My group shoots cannons, mortars, buffalo rifles, cap n ball pistols and anything else that makes a good boom. This summer I've been working out with my 22's to help with a turtle problem on the lake where I live. Really wasn't worried too much about the black bars but Mr. Gonefishin' said a glacier was melting around there somewhere and the polar bars have moved into the area. Sure hope the excrement doesn't hit the ocelator.

I am with you Cool, I know all about the knee stuff. Just had by left one replaced and have the right one scheduled for replacement in early January.

Wait as long as you can, and then consider knee replacement. It sure is helping me.

Good luck with the bear hunting. I was just trying my terrible sense of humor with the earlier post.

I use to live in the area near 4 Mile Church road and hwy 53, spotted several bears in the area. One right on Yellow Creek rd. just south of hwy 53, he was standing in the middle of the road, stayed there until we got about 30 feet from him, I had slowed to a crawl to get a good look at him, think I may have a picture we took, would have to look through the old 35mm albums. There are several wildlife management areas there, one off of hwy 372 near Conns Creek Road, can't remember the name of it. There is also the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area off hwy 53 east of Jasper. Good Trout fishing on the Amacola River south of the hwy 53 bridge in the big rapids, several holes in the rapids that hold fish. Also north of the bridge at a place called Steel Bridge, take Amacola Church rd, north to Steel bridge rd, take a right, you'll know when you're there...........

Back to lurking mode!
