Spent the weekend at the lake and was really surprised how few people were at the lake. Had a little rain Saturday evening which was fine as it cooled everything down and we ended up going to Mass that evening instead of Sunday morning. Allowed us to take advantage of smooth waters in the morning for skiing and wakeboarding. Speaking of which, I finally decided to wakeboard this weekend. Boy did I stink at it but it was fun. I look forward to working on my skills in the future and maybe my kids will stop laughing at me. I am also a little sore. :-)

Good for you, MM.  It was a great weekend for the lake, not many boats at all. I tried the wake board one time.  I have decided it is OK for me not to learn, just like I decided that slalom skiing was not for me.   My son will be here next week and he will get up and wake board with ease.  And I will think "I can do that".....

I had pretty much decided it was not important for me to wakeboard but I decided to try it on a whim. I had tried once before and got a blister before I got out of the water (didn't rotate the board soon enough). Was surprised how easy it was to get up and how hard it is to turn. Went right outside the wake in the direction I was pointing when I came up and could not get inside the wake. Kept feeling like I would catch an edge and fall. Will work on it next time and see if I can improve.

What is the trick to get up and out of the water. I slalom all the time with no problem but, I just can't get up on the wakeboard.

You need to rotate your body as he boat starts the pull. I have people practice in the water and on land before attempting the move behind a boat. You need to let the water and the board do all the work; very little physical effort is needed. See if you can find a basic video on the internet if you don't have a good instructor available. Turning is also very easy and just a matter of balance ....it's way easier to get up on a wake board (compared to slalom) once you learn how. Effort and energy expended while riding is also much less unless you want to start doing aerials.

UM is correct about the rotation being key but the driver of the boat is also important. What I do to get beginner wakeboarders out of the water when I am driving is put the motor in gear while watching them. When I see them rotate the wakeboard I slowly advance the throttle and they pop right up. The wakeboard has a lot of surface area and if you rotate you will be surprised how quickly you come up, especially when compared to a slalom ski. What happens all too often is that the throttle is advanced too quickly and the wakeboard is not turned. That creates a tremendous amount of force and you just can't hold on or turn the board. It doesn't take much of a turn, 20 to 25 degrees and up you come. But the key in my view with a beginner is to start at idle and watch for the turn, then add power steadily until they pop. I also tell them to expect the first few times to go outside the wake in the direction they are pointing and not to worry about it. The other thing to watch for is the snowboarders. Once up they will naturally rotate the wakeboard 180 degrees to make turns. Not a good idea but a friends daughter actually did it successfully several times on her first time until we told her it wasn't necessary. Its kind of funny that I have successfully gotten dozens of wakeboarders up for the first time and had never done it myself. I just listened to the advice of the experts as they coached others and perfected my throttle technique. Sounds like you are getting ready to give it a try. Good luck!

I now have the courage to try again. You are right. I wasn't turning at all. I thought the power of the boat would pop me up. So, I would leave the board sideways and finally have to drop the rope. I will inform my son of your technique with regards to driving the boat and give it another try. Update to follow.
