Looking for the best iphone/ipad GPS lake app for Lake Martin.

Navionics?

Need to follow trail/breadcrumbs back from Chuck's in the dark!

I have the Navion iphone app and think its pretty good.  Would be invaluable at night.

I've used the free Navionics app on an iPad and it seems to work okay.  It is really designed to use on the iPhone, but will work fine on the Pad as well.  I opted for the $10 upgrade to be able to plan routes, etc.  I'm not sure how useful it would be on the tiny display of the iPhone.

One thing I see as a shortcoming is that there is no 'manual' available to print.  The only documentation is a 'help' menu, and that isn't very helpful to me.  I've contacted Navionics and they say nothing is available in a PDF or .TXT file.

I will say that we have had the Navionics software abruptly halt operation with no warning several times.  When it does this, it returns you to your desktop screen.  It takes 20-30 seconds to start back up and re-acquire GPS fixes.  This is not fun if you are looking to make a turn.

Other than that, it works fairly well, especially considering the price.  Remember that compared to running a well-designed chartplotter, an iPhone or iPad has a lousy display for use in bright sunlight.  I'd suggest using it under a Bimini top if you really want it usable during the day.  At night, it should not be a problem.
