Mothballing the pontoon this week.

An ongoing debate around our area is whether or not boating was down this summer on the lake?

At times, the Rocks did seem to have fewer boats than I remember, but at other times not. I noticed this morning there are over 130 boats for sell on this website. Is that unusual?

Maybe some marina owners could help us settle this question.

If the foot of the engine remains in the water throughout the winter the lower unit won't freeze. You should fill the gas tank and treat the fuel with Sta-bil. If you don't intend to use the boat for an extended period it would be wise to remove the battery, take it to the garage or workshop, and keep a trickle charge on it.

I've kept a pontoon boat with an outboard engine in the water full time over the past five years and haven't had a problem.

We sold approximately the same number of gallons of fuel this year as we have for the past couple of years. Of course, the gross $$$ are up because of the rising fuel costs, but the # of gallons and our margins are about the same. Since the average customer only uses 100-150 gallons per season, an additional $75-$100 in fuel cost is not enough to keep anybody from enjoying the lake.

Interestingly, we sold more gallons of fuel on a single day (July 3rd) than we did in Oct 04, Nov 04, Dec 04, Jan 05, Feb 05, Mar 05, and April 05 - all put together! Talk about seasonality.

gave you good details. Lots of ifs here, but if the foot is exposed and if you have some water seeping into the foot over the summer, the water could freeze and damage the foot. Solution is to change the foot oil before winter sets in to remove any water.

Only other issue is having the foot in the water all winter. I always raise my foot out of the water during the boating season to help avoid water seeping into the foot. Take my pontoon out each winter.

Interesting info Don, thanks for the comparatives.

The 100-150 gallon estimate is interesting since for most people that is only 15-20 hours of use. I don't doubt it though, given how few hours are on lots of used boats. What a waste of a boat and great lake! I think the only time we haven't run more than that in a month is when we weren''t there!

BTW - I bet CATBOAT used more than that. Each day.....
