Does anyone know how long it took to "fill up" Lake Martin when construction was completed in 1926? Just curious.

On June 9, 1926, workers closed the gates to the dam. The Alabama Power Company declared the Cherokee Bluffs dam completed and in service on December 31, 1926. Some sources cite the next date, January 1, 1927 as the finish date. By spring of 1927, the lake was reported almost full, but I have not found any information as to the exact date it was officially declared as “full”.

Of course, the definition of full may have been affected by perspective. I imagine to people seeing 80 feet of water in a valley they had walked in for decades, it probably seemed pretty darn full even if it was only at 481' officially......

I agree, but I have a picture showing the placement of a girder on the Kowaliga Creek Bridge (Hwy. 63) in 1927. Dixie Construction Company completed building the bridge in 1927. All the girders and concrete forms were delivered by barge after the lake water reached its maximum height, whatever that was, in May, 1927. That was the same bridge all us old-timers remember using before replacing it with the present bridge. So, I would say the lake level had to be at least to the level it is now.
