OK WW and MM make enlighten me. In a very Democratic state and another Democratic trending state conservative Republicans who ran to the moderate center were elected. In a New York Cong. district which had been represented by a Republican since the last half of the 19th century, an extreme conservative who had the backing of most the Republican noise machine and ran to the looney right lost.

This nation very much needs a strong national opposition party. I know you would rather go down with guns blazing defending "your" conservative principals rather than stay alive and strengthing America by moderating party views. The problem is that "your" principals scare ths heck out of most Americans. In the short run "your" principals may win a few votes but in the long run it will relegate the Republican Party to years of minority status everywhere except the south and a few thinly populated western/mid-western states. Wake up and smell the coffee!

Time will tell ... we will see. It sure seems to be a grass roots movement across the country. Polls say so and the few elections say so. Obama certainly lost his policical clout in two govenors races in states he won big a year earlier ... the exit polls say about 1 in 4 that voted republican voted for Obama and said they were dissatisfied with what they were seeing and did not want another democrat in office ... so they were sending a message.

But really ... why shouldn't people ... what has been accomplished in a year. Seriously ... what that impacts the american people that they see and feel.

There is a saying in politics ... people will vote their pocket book.

Archie, for the life of me, how does limited government intervention in our lives, lower taxes, strong national defense, no cradle to grave healthcare, no pork barrel spending scare people? It must scare you because true conservative principles dictate that you survive on your own without any handouts and wealth re-distribution from those who take risks and keep the engine of this great nation going.

Archie: First of all I take exception to your premises in this post. Your characterization of the election in the 23rd is all wrong. The GOP machine was all behind the RINO (Dede S.), including the much despised Newt Gingrich. Had the NY GOP (which is a mess) not selected her in the first place and put forward even a moderate conservative (i.e., not the ideal conservative candidate but one that had at least a modicum of the right credentials) then I believe they would have won this race. If you look at the Dem candidate he ran as a conservative. Heck, the looney left supported the RINO (ACORN, unions, etc.) instead of the Democrat. So the Dem runs as a conservative and wins while the third party candidate with no backing from the GOP only loses by 4 points. And you call that a victory? Just wait until he gets to DC and starts to vote with Pelosi. My advice is he not buy a house.

I also take exception to your characterization of the candidates that won in NJ and VA. The reason they won is they focused on the issues of greatest importance to the voters which was runaway taxes, government spending and the economy. Frankly, social issues were not in the forefront in either race despite the repeated attempts by Corzine in particular to make them an issue. Only you and Nancy Pelosi can find comfort in those two election results. Both are fiscal and social conservatives but were able to win on fiscal issues which should scare the he!! out of Dems for 2010 as they will not have their usual bag of tricks to use.

As for your second point you are once again completely wrong in your premise. You only have to look at recent electoral history to see conclusively that when the Republican party has enjoyed the most electoral success is when they have run on fiscal and social conservative values. When they lose is when they abandon those values. Name for me one successful Republican Presidential candidate in the last 25 years that ran as a moderate? There are none. And name for me one successful Democrat Presidential candidate in the last 25 years that ran on liberal principals? There are none, not even the Messiah.

The fact is our principals might scare you but not the majority of Americans. In fact, recent polls show that over 40% of Americans now self identify as conservative and 20% as liberal. And our principals include a strong national defense, limited government, limited taxation and traditional family values. I recognize that the people you hang out with in Midtown or Little Five Points poo poo those principals but you are in the minority. Its just you live in your isolated little world and assume that the rest of the world is like you.

And as for your prognostication about the perpetual demise of the GOP as an electoral force you only have to look at our country's long history to understand that this too is wrong. Just like we can never expect perpetual dominance over Dems it is unwise and historically nonsensical to propose the opposite. And trust me when I tell you this in all sincerity, I don't think we will be taking your counsel as to how to return to dominance. You have neither our best interests nor the political acuity to be trusted, after all you voted for Obama......

I believe in God, limited government, individual freedom and self responsibility.. I don't believe in abortion on demand and welfare programs that keep generations in bondage.. Guess that makes me a conservative.. but which of these principles scare the heck out of you and the majority of Americans??? Help me out Pal??

The crickets are chirping. As usual Archie asked to be illuminated and he was and now he is silent. Probably too busy living the good life as a wildly successful architect while measured unemployment heads toward 11% (real unemployment closer to 20%)....let them eat cake, eh Archie?!?!?!
