It was in Alabama Outdoors. I'm not disputing the article. Lake Martin is one of the clearest lake in the south. The most infertile area is around Kowaliga and the most fertile is in the Elkahatchee area. I go along with that, I've always had better luck at the upper end of the lake fishing.

I like to stripe fish and like having the stripe in the lake, it just makes me wonder why they would put an eating machine like stripe in a lake that has a hard time supporting the present fish. The article said that according to a study, our fish grow slower because of the lack of food. Do they stock shad? If not, why not? Even though fertilizing the lake would make it murkier, wouldn't that be the thing to do? I understand a lot of it has to do with recreation and making everyone happy, the economy and so on.

I know they stocked stripe well before this study was done, possibly before we could even measure the fertility of a lake but does anyone know about them stocking bait fish and fertilizing?

Judging by what some people i know pay to fertilize their 2 acre farm ponds, my armchair scientist answer is that it would be so expensive as to be impossible to fertilize a lake as huge as Lake Martin. But who knows. i can ask some folks at ADEM that i know.

Releasing shad? Maybe that would be too expensive to make an impact also, but that sounds like a good idea to me.

Also i wonder about the term "infertile" - maybe that is a scientific term for ph levels or something, but i have seen infertile ponds that are brackish with literally no life in them. Doesn't seem to fit the description of Martin.

The lake is full of threadfin shad. No need to stock them. Fertilizing--Way the heck too costly. Too much inflow of water to control. Brackish water--Low DO. (disolved oxygen) Stripers--One reason they were added, besides recreation and tourism, was supposed to be to help control the shad. Spot-tail minnows everywhere, also forage fish. Stripers have had an effect on other species in the lake. One of my suppositions is that the crappie population has been affected by them. BTW, from my previous posts, you can tell that I'm not a fan of stripe bass.

LOL! With a handle like Spot Remover I guess not! My neighbor is a tourney fisherman and tells me all the time he wishes they would kill them all.

The cost makes sense, especially with the water outflow. The way they described infertile was a lack of nutrients at the bottom of the food chain.

You will see both AM and PM which is the time... daytime or night time. Best fishing is PM as you know.
