when i feel our country is on the edge of the abyss--morality--me not us--trans this trans that--work/don't work--free stuff- anger--abortion-- hollywood--etc. etc. etc.

My sense is we have had worse times and clearly better times but our current situation reminds me of the malaise days of Jimmy Carter.  But it was much worse leading up to and during the Civil War and of course WW 1 and 2 in terms of actual harm.  We are in a spiritual battle between good and evil....and I'm not talking about Democrats vs Republicans.  This isn't about party affiliation, it's about whether we completely turn away from God.  I read a fascinating article about the prophetic warnings of Cardinal Fulton Sheen.  Look at these quotes and ponder that he wrote them 80 years ago.  Our problems are not new but are manifesting themselves in new and more diabolical ways.

“secular college and university education teaches in one form or another that there is no such thing as evil or guilt, that there are no absolute standards of right and wrong, that right and wrong depend entirely upon one’s point of view.”

“Wherein lies the future of America?” Sheen questions. “The problem is concerned with a choice between two classes: The intelligentsia and the masses.” He goes on to say, “Our conclusion will be: The future of a better America is in the masses and not in the intelligentsia, for we are witnessing in our national life what might be called the Betrayal of the Intellectuals, or the Treason of the Educated.”  Who is the intelligentsia? For Sheen, they are “those who deny absolute standards of right and wrong, make truth and error relative to a point of view, and completely ignore the will and its discipline in the training of youth.”

“But when democracies lose the spirit of religion,” Sheen writes, “they have no fulcrum for self-sacrifice.” Sheen also notes, “The preservation of America is conditioned upon discipline and self-sacrifice, but since these are inseparable from religion and morality, the future of America depends on Americans’ attitude toward God.”

I keep a small home equity line for emergencies and to keep from selling my investments--when Joe took office the interest rate on the home equity line was 3%--today its 8.25%; my wife and I,  when we go to Alex City like to stop at Wendys for a small chocolate frostie--before joe took office they were 2 for $1.00; last week they were $1.99 EACH --we passed;when i go to the grocery store, I invariable see shoppers pick up an item, look at price & place back on shelf

I have never been one to really look at prices when I go to the store, but I do now.  Even the price of dog bones has gone up.  Dog food is hard to come by and it has gone up significantly in price.

Try finding high protein grain free dog food - its getting impossible and the prices are crazy - 22lbs for what we used to get 50.  Shelves are bare in most places.  places that used to carry it all the time dont anymore.  CO-OP stopped carrying, Tractor Supply in 3 stores have empty spaces, Walmart occasionally had some, but have not had any in over a month.  Had people looking in three counties and found 3 bags at petsmart in Oxford - Got what they had.

ordered from amazon several months back - apparently the bag was so mangled in shipping they just refunded and said oh well and would not ship any more.

Big box stores are your problem.  Go to your local feed and seed.  I recently swtched to using Floyds in Dadveille.  I buy 21% protien 50lb bag for $26.  Brand is called Farm Hand.  our dogs love it.  Even the little doog who has aleays been a picky eater will eat it sometimes  instead of his soft food.

I have been feeling rather glum about the world situation.  Biden is writing checks his butt can't cash.  No one thinks to ask the American public if we are willing to go bankrupt for Ukraine or any other NATO country.  The Hill had an interesting essay today about questions that Biden needs to answer 1/ what is the strategy for Ukraine.  2/ how much money does he see us spending?  and for how long?  3/at what point will we put boots on the ground? 

I feel rather glum about all the talk about nuclear weapons - I grew up with the Cold War.  When the USSR collapsed, there was a certain sense of hope that the world would be better and more stable, yet Putin has seen to it that it was just a fleeting hope.  Although this Administration is betting that Putin won't use his nuclear weapons, I'm not so sure.  Particularly if China is backing him.  That august organization- the UN (wothless) voted todayt to demand Russia remove their troops from Ukraine - well thqt is ridiculous, but it was interesting to see which countries abstained and which ones flat out voted no.  

I read today that if 'China helps Russia with equpment, we will likely sanction Chinesse companies.  Maybe go so far as to restrict the export of aviation parts and microchips to China.  But I am not at all sure that sancitons will work - they certainly haven't brought Russia around.  I wish the Administration would tone down the verbal exchanges.  Biden does not have to answer everything that China or Russia says.

It seems like everything is just going to explode.
