That should be a top item on the agenda of the EPA. Forget about the boating issue, sadly it`s done. There are old places on the lake that has got to be in violation, add ons, gray water not going to the tank., leach fields to close to the shoreline,3 or 4 friends on the same system, and the top item is boats, think people. I`VE SEEN IT .

Nobody wants to touch this issue, could be because you are one of the violaters.

Hi JIM, Not sure wheter this meets the intent of your post. I am currently involved in having a new Lake House constructed. The old cabin was estimated by the appraiser as in excess of 40 years in age. In the 5 years I have owned it, I have not noticed any apparent septic system problems. Although the builder could possibly tie into the old system, I have directed him to price the planned construction with a new system. The old system is between the cabin and the Lake. The new system will be placed to one side of the new cabin and significantly further back from the Lake.

I believe this "No Brainer" decision on my part touches on your concerns. I am not a rich or wealty person in dollars, but doing other than the above does not make practical sense in the long term dollar wise or enviromentally.

Fed, you are smart, what I was refuring to was the make shift systems that have been there from, god knows how long. Residents running washers, showers, dish water (gray water ) into a hose on the ground as not to over work the drain fields ,which eventualy goes into the lake. There are places on the lake that have 2 or more residances on one system, they are normally what use to be camping areas, and are now full time residences.

Certainly sounds disgusting and glad it is not around my place. First time I had heard the expression "gray water:, but I understand the meaning now.

I'm currently in the beginning stages of building also and infrastructure is of prime importance. Mantaining natural balance with the environment is job one. The septic system will be of the "berm" variety. Extermely low impact. No one will know it's even there. All structures will conform to the natural setting, not the other way around. My family has been on this Lake since before it was a lake and it was just the Tallapoosa River. It's respect, not only for the Lake and it's denizens but also for the memory of my family.
