Can someone please tell me . . .

How many "at bats" did Babe Ruth have when he hit his 714 home run ?

And the same question for Barry Bonds ?

And if you can give me a reference for your answer, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you very much.

You gotta throw Hank in the the mix. Babe Ruth was the Greatest home run hitter that ever lived. He had the fewest at bats, plus he also started out as a pitcher. Ted Williams was the greatest hitter that ever got in the batters box. He also fought in 2 wars.

Thanx for your input.

Ok, let's throw in Hank Aaron.

Which one of the three - Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Barry Bonds, had the fewest number of career "at bats" when they hit home run #714.

I just read a few days ago in a newspaper, but can't give you a source. Babe had significantly fewer at-bats to get 714 homers than either Bonds or Aaron. Your common sense would tell you that as he was a very good major league pitcher for several years before becoming just a hitter--non-pitcher. Babe was in a class by himself and will never be equaled.
You can easily Google it if you wish to confirm the data. An interesting fact: Babe hit THREE homers on his last day--712, 713 and 714.

I don't see how anyone can compare Bonds to Aaron or Ruth.

I just agree with some articles I have read, perhaps he will now go away.

Thank You all for your inputs.

I wasn't sure how many career "at bats" each of the three - Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, or Babe Ruth - had when they reached the magic number of 714 home runs.

But it makes common sense, to me at least, that the champ is the one with the LOWEST number.

And the Babe did it . . . on hot dogs and beer . . . not steroids.

The Babe also did it in the segregation years, which meant that he wasn't facing the best players, but the best WHITE players. How many would he have hit if he had faced the likes of Satchel Paige and Smokey Joe Williams on a regular basis?

Likewise, when you want to talk abot home run champs, look no further than Josh Gibson, who is about 200 HRs ahead of Aaron... and who died at the age of 35; no doubt he would have added to his total.

There is always one out there that plays the race card. I think there is a astrick beside Rodger Maris`s name when he broke the record for the single season(about 4 more games). As far as I am concerned Josh (whats his name )could not shine the Babe`s shoes. And the throwers could not compare to what the Babe faced. And the Babe was a great pitcher.

If you don't even know his name, then chances are good that you have no idea how good he was. Here's a hint: he was good enough to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame-- the same HOF that the Babe is in.

And I wasn't playing the race card, I was just stating a fact: before Jackie Robinson, many of the best players never faced each other. Therefore, comparing "before" stats to "after" stats is futile.

Mickey Mantle was the best ball player I have ever seen play in person. Take the record book and stick it up your ###. And yes I knew his name was Willie Gibson.

WSMS makes a good point. For the segregation issue, and for many other reasons, it is impossible to really compare players from different eras. I personally think Babe was the best player of all time, but that is JUST MY OPINION. Someone else may have another opinion and all opinions are equally valid. No need to get abusive with the comments.

Hey guys . . . I didn't want to get a war going. I was just hoping someone could answer my question.

But it seems to me, that if The Babe hit 714 home runs in X number of career "at bats," then Hank Aaron, Barry Bonds, and anyone else would have to hit 714 home runs in X - 1 career "at bats" in order to beat the Babe.

And as far as Hall of Famer Satchel Paige goes, he pitched in the Majors in 1948-49 and 1951-53. And while in the Majors, he lost more than he won with a record of 28 wins and 31 losses. It would be a real treat to see him pitch to a "juiced" Barry Bonds.

Yes, he did go 28-31 in his MLB career. Of course, that career started in 1948, and he was born in July, 1906... making him almost 42 when he was an MLB rookie! Surely you'll agree that the MLB didn't see him at his peak?! (Even as old as he was by the time he was allowed to play MLB, Joe DiMaggio called him "the best and fastest pitcher I've ever faced.")
