Can someone tell me what types of turtles are common in Lake Martin. We have about 6, from teeny tiny to huge, hanging around our dock every day. Just wondered what kind they are. Yellow stripes on their heads, no ridges or bumps on their shells. We think they are "Painted Turtles". Any ideas?

if they have a red mark behind the eye where the ear would be..they are called red eared sliders. I have seen a few of them but usually we see the easten painted turtle as you described. have caught a few snapping trurtles too.

my nephew is into turtles, so I emailed him, he tells me that what he sees mostly in the lake are yellowbelly sliders, they are a lot like the red eared described above except they don't have the red ears. (who knew turtles had ears? LOL!)

he says we also have a lot of mud and musk (supposedly look a lot alike) and softshell turtles, and something called a cooter which looks like a slider; i always thought a cooter was something else. (LOL again!) and snappers, too.

some red ear sliders, some painted turtles but not as many as the yellowbelly.

I thought a cooter and a snapper would be found at a HO's hangout.
P.S. tell Cat the location
