I noticed you seem to know a lot of interesting things about the lake, and about the wildlife here. It sounds like you have been around Lake Martin for a long time and have done a lot of observing and a lot of exploring.
Have you ever considered writing a book about it? I think it would be an interesting read.
Even if you didn't want to write a book about it, you could do a really cool blog. I think a lot of people would be interested.

References to ego aside, I think Hound is genuinely interested in Swimmer's knowledge of the lake and its creatures (except the two-legged kind).

There's an abundance of natural beauty in and around the lake and it would be nice if we all could benefit from another person's knowledge and experience.

Now if he could just tell us where the crappie are biting on any given day and hour....especially around Parker Creek....:-}

Hound, I believe you are sincere, but what you should do is look up Bailey Jones aka BAJ. He has a very nice book about his expereince 'growing up' on the lake that I am sure you would enjoy. He also writes a column for "Lake" magazine. As for me, most of the 'stories' I would have about growing up on the lake I would NEVER put in writing. Although I guess the statute of limitations has run out on those youthfull indescretions...lol. Writing is not my forte, but I beleive that I can give as good a guided tour of the lake as anybody around. I have seen all of her 750 miles of shoreline. I've read a couple of books on the construction and history of this and other Alabama lakes. I have been on tours of several APCO dams and been through Martin 5-6 times at least. I have been as far up each of her creeks as can be navigated with a pontoon boat at 488 and above. But the best of all was having someone who worked for APCO to spend countless hours talking with and getting details on the many projects he managed throughout his career.

But I am not unique either. There are lots of folks that have been around a long time like me and aquired a vast knowledge of the lake. One thing is for sure too, is if you want a social who's who, then I am not the one to talk too. I am way too uncouth for polite society. I know that comes as a shock to you...lol.

I have read Bailey's writings and they are good, but he mostly writes about growing up on the lake.

This came to me because I saw your response on the Graveyard Island thread. And I seem to remember a number of times you've chimed in with information about wildlife and about birds. I suspect that you are an "observer". Lots of people know stuff, but it's not the same as being an observer and seeing things over a period of years. I have a number of books of this type and they are some of the most enjoyable reading.

We have a small aluminum boat and we've used that to explore some of the unpopulated areas over here by us. For example, the other day I noticed a stacked stone wall up in the woods, seemingly unrelated to anyone's property. How did it get there? How long as it been there and who built it? I suspect that there are all kinds of cool little spots that only someone who has been on the lake for a long time would know.

Anyway, it was just a thought. But, you should think about it.

And as far as a social "who's who". Not my thing at all.

I have seen that same thing (way up the creek past your place in the general direction of 259??) -- almost looks like there may have been a bridge across a creek at one time - on the right as you go up stream it looks like there might be the remains of a primitive road.

about the same place. Lots of flat rock that could have been a primitive road. Hmmm. I hadn't considered that.

... I am not familiar with what you are talking about, or actually exactly where you are talking about. But if you have the jon boat make sure that DH takes you up Oakachoy Creek. I believe it is my favorite. It is big enough that you can go far enough up it to get away from the 'lake' and when you cant go any further by boat get out and walk upstream and you come to a nice little water fall. It is a really nice little secluded spot that I have used to de-stress on several occasions. Also, if you walk up the hill on the left as you go upstream it used to offer a really nice view out over the lake from certain spots. But I imagine there has been substantial tree growth since I have been there that could be blocking views now. I am seriously going to try to make it up there this year. I can't remember exactly when the last time was that I was up that creek. It may be as long as 20 years ago now. Dang, now I am really feeling my years.........

Same creek. Looked it up on Google, and found a mapped area, to include satellite view. The area Hound is talking about is where the creek is about 15 or 20 yards wide, before you get to an area on the right that has sort of a flat, or gently slanted large rock outcropping - at which point the creek takes about a 30 degree left turn and starts getting pretty shallow and rocky.

Have been back up in there on the Wave Runner but was afraid of going too much farther for fear of ingesting rocks into the impeller. How far is the falls from there?

We went up as far as where it gets very rocky and looks like a mini-rapids. It's so pretty. Looks like it might be good fishing too, if one can keep from hanging their line on the rocks or the trees.
We also went up in that area beyond that small island. Not too much to see but some turtles sunning themselves on a log.
Nice thing about the jon boat is that you can get up into the small, shallow places, and close enough to see the small signs of spring.

I can't answer your question. It has been too long since I was up there to remember such minute details. Just go as far as you can and tie up and start walking. It won't be more than 100 yards or so.

If the rains continue I might be able to take a cabin cruiser!

Seriously, I think I'll check it out. Sounds interesting.

At the mouth of this creek, try free-lining a minnow early or late in the day. Never know what lurks there??

If I can get out of Fungummery this weekend and travel to Nirvana I may give it a try!
