Did anyone see the clip of her "dressing down" Brig. General Michael Walsh simply because he addressed her as "ma'am?" She insisted he refer to her as Senator because she had worked so hard to "earn" that title. In a very condescending tone, I might add. Army protocall allows the use of "senator" or "ma'am" and General Walsh chose the latter. He should be crucified..... right Barbara? What an arrogant Beotch with an inflated sense of self-worth. These California politicians live in a world of their own.

My biggest issue when i viewed the exchange and read about it (LA Times) was that she was not calling him general, then she tells him how she worked hard for the senator title .... ummm he did not work hard with service to his country to get the General title.
But as a good military person he showed her respect and said yes senator.
What a piece of work she is.

It's a subtle Washington thing. But, I'm not defending it. She obviously wasn't liking what he had to say. This is very typical of what goes on in hearings. If you think the Senators are bad, their ssenior staffers are worse in arrogance. Lots of people on the Hill don't like the military.

The really sad thing about the hill staffers' disdain for the military is that it is the military, by maintaining our national security, that allows them the opportunity to be the condescending, arrogant pr!cks that they are. I saw it as well during my four years in the "Five Sided Funny Farm".

Forgive me for my Southern roots. I still maintain she is an egotistical, self-rightous B----! You have spent way to much time on the "Hill."

Southern culture is not the way of Washington.
I'm sure she interpreted the ma'm as being miniumly polite and somehow taking away from her status as a Senator. I don't know if this was his intent or not. A lot of uniformed military people don't spend a lot of time in Washington, and therefore don't know all the "rules". Or she may have just been in a b*tchy mood and decided to take it out on the General.
In the military, saying "yes, General" is considered less polite than saying "yes, sir".
I don't make up these conventions. Believe me, I have seen things go to h*ll in a handbasket and been left wondering why. I don't know why so many people on the Hill have animosity for the military, but they do. Particularly Democrats.

It's probably that the dems do not feel we need the military ... and if we didn't then they would have more money to waste with bigger government so more and more people looked to government for their needs. That will keep them voting democrat for fear someone will take it from them and they would actually have to live their own lives.

Did you actually see and hear, not read, the footage? My problem is more with her tone than the actual verbage. It was very mean-spirited and condescending and , for some reason, I have a special affection for Military people and, not so much, for politicians. I guess that's just a "me" thing. I'll work on it.

I saw a clip of it on TV. I'm wondering why it surprises you -- I've rountinely heard that kind of tone out of member of Congress used on other people. They just say what they want. Who's going to stop them? Certainly not the person testifying.
I can tell you that when preparing for Hill testimony, the Congressional Liasion people in DoD will tell you to expect this and to not respond in kind or let them throw you off. There is a reason that the Members of Congress are sitting on a dias and the person testifying are sitting below them.

It's just the arrogance of politicians, on both sides of the isle, still astounds me. Especially when they show disdain for our military. Like I said, it's probably a "me" thing and I'll do my best to work on it.

Too bad that our elected officials forget that they are there to serve their constituents and not themselves.
The terms "ma'am" and "sir" come naturally to a military person and are signs of respect and deference. Too bad she was so self-consumed that she could not see and accept it.

I presented mega million bomber budget to a bunch of jerk congressional staffers.. Young guys.. no clue.. had to go the the POAC, work out and bite my tongue.. Got home, growled at the kids and kicked the dog.. In several congressional hearings, I listened to house members beriding general officers as ill informed and stupid.. arrogance abounds.. believe me.. memories are almost as vivid as combat.. in combat you know the enemy..

In the Army, it was considered less polite to say "Yes, General" than it was to say "Yes, sir". One shows that you are being respectufl only to the rank, the other shows that you are being respectful to the man.
I worked for the Army, in the Pentagon, in the Army Staff for 5 years 1990-1995. Maybe it was different in the AF. Lots of differences I have observed between the way the AF functions and the Army.

Other than maybe Hound, Feb, and a few others who might have graced the hallowed halls of that "magnificent" edifice, I doubt that too many on this forum have ever heard of the POAC before now....:>)
BTW, I was a young O-3 during my tenure and was barely able to put food on the table, much less join POAC.....

Sorry, cat jumped on my mouse.
"An Officer at the POAC is an Officer on Duty"... LOL.
When I worked there, it was pretty grody, but I understand they have totally modernized it and it's actually pretty nice now.
